  1. Portuguese mariners and sailors explored this area in the middle
  2. 15th Century, and the slave trade flourished in the 17th and 18th
  3. Centuries.  In the 19th Century Portuguese colonization began. 
  4. In the 1960s an independent guerrilla war was fought and formed
  5. a government in the interior of the country that achieved
  6. international support.  On September 10, 1974 full independence
  7. came after the overthrow of the Portuguese regime.  In November
  8. 1980, Joao Bernardo Vieira attained absolute power in a coup.
